About Us
Why the name Hortulus?
After hearing Ed Blondin describe the garden service he hoped to start some day, Ed's father-in-law John Czechowski did some research and uncovered a Medieval poem called "The Hortulus" by a 9th century Benedictine monk named Walafrid Strabo.
"The Hortulus," which translates to "The Little Garden," celebrates Strabo's appreciation for the natural world and love of plants.
After several centuries of obscurity, the manuscript of "The Hortulus" was rediscovered in 1484. It has been regarded as an important work of gardening literature ever since.

When he is not gardening and landscaping, Ed Blondin teaches young people to enjoy gardening through his work with Michigan State University's Junior Master Gardeners' Volunteer Program. |
